Navigate the gravel terrain with caution and celebrate your achievement upon reaching Mweka Hut.

Itinerary

The trip, from Moshi to the entrance of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park usually lasts around 50 minutes. Along the way we drive through the village of Machame situated on the mountains slopes.
As we depart from the park gate we trek through a rainforest, on a meandering path that ascends a ridge. The trail can get muddy and slick further down. It's wise to have gaiters and trekking poles handy. We proceed a distance until we arrive at the Machame Camp.

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

After we finish breakfast we move away, from the areas of the rainforest. Proceed along a path that goes uphill. We cross a valley. Walk along a steep rocky ridge adorned with heather until we reach the end of the ridge. The trail then veers west towards a river gorge. It's time to take a break have dinner and spend the night at the Shira campsite.

Habitat: Moorland

Today is a day of hiking up and sleeping low. You'll trek through the alpine desert towards the peak of Kibo, where you can see the glaciers clearly. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. For those feeling energetic there's a climb, up the 300 foot Lava Tower before heading down to Barranco Camp in the day. You'll pass through the stunning 'Garden of the Senecios filled with groundsel plants and towering lobelias. The Barranco Valley is known for its beauty and charm making it one of the spots, on the trail. Although its a day it's an opportunity to acclimatize as you won't reach this altitude again for another two days! Spend the night at Barranco Camp.

Habitat: Semi Desert

After we finish breakfast we depart from Barranco. Proceed along a ridge crossing the Barranco Wall until we reach the Karanga Valley campsite. Today is a day designated for getting used to the altitude.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

After having breakfast we depart from Karanga. Reach the intersection that links to the Mweka Trail. We then proceed to the Barafu Hut. At this stage you have finished the South Circuit providing perspectives of the summit. Here we set up camp take a break savor dinner and gear up for summit day. From this spot you can catch sight of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

In the hours of the morning from midnight, to 2 am we push forward towards the summit nestled between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. We travel northwest. Navigate through scree towards Stella Point on the edge of the crater. This part of the journey is both mentally and physically demanding.
Upon reaching Stella Point at 18,600 feet we pause for a break. Are treated to a breathtaking sunrise if weather permits. Continuing from Stella Point you may encounter snow as you make your one hour climb to the summit. Uhuru Peak marks the pinnacle of Mount Kilimanjaro and Africa itself. Those who hike faster will witness sunrise from this point.
Descending from the summit we proceed down towards the Mweka Hut campsite with a stop at Barafu for lunch, along the way. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for navigating gravel during descent. The Mweka Camp is located in a forest area where mist or rain showers may be expected.
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent

After having breakfast we will proceed with our descent, towards the Mweka Park Gate to collect our summit certificates. The lower areas might be damp and muddy so it's advisable to use gaiters and trekking poles. Wearing shorts and t shirts should suffice (. Keep rain gear and warmer clothing nearby in case). Following the gate there is a hour of travel to reach Mweka Village. A vehicle will be waiting at the village to transport you back to your hotel, in Moshi.
